How Our Coaches Move Well at Home

Here at Bluearth, we love learning about how people move well in their home and neighbourhood, and the activities and routines they have set up to live an active lifestyle; because for every person that’s moving well, we’re one step closer to combating the physical inactivity crisis and instilling a lifelong love of movement into our nation.

In light of this, we asked some of our staff members how they have been moving well at home and additionally what moving well means to them.

Here’s what they had to say.

Staying active on a consistent basis over the holidays can be tricky with so much down time, relaxation and scheduled family events that usually revolve around sitting and eating whilst enjoying each other’s company. This is great and it’s the break and reset we all really deserved.

Over the holidays I have tried my best to stay active by starting my day with some simple balancing to wake up my system. I have been doing this with anything I can find lying around, swapping from one foot, to two with so many other variations available.

I find when I anchor this to my morning it really helps to open up my hips and ankles which can become quite sticky if we are sitting or sedentary for long periods throughout the day. I also find it to be a terrific activity and space to practice mindfulness. When we are fully present and focused on staying balanced and upright the body responds by firing up all the deep stability systems of our core. We walk, move, and feel great when this system is working for us.

Five minutes after or before a short walk around the block leaves me grounded and balanced for the rest of the day.

During the holidays our family has been moving in lots of different ways; swimming, walking, playing with the footy, working on our balancing or playing at the park.

We keep our movement simple and fun so everyone has a good time. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take up half the day as long as we get outdoors at some point.

For us as parents it is important to make enjoyable movement a part of our son’s everyday life, this way he grows up having fun with us.

My advice would be to keep it fun and easy. Walk to the park, take a ball and throw it around for a little bit.

My New Year’s resolution was to become more active in the days where I would most likely be sitting around so to improve movement throughout my day I would be wearing my Apple Watch and ensuring that I get at least 10,000 steps a day. If I don’t achieve that I will make up for it the next day and try and improve it.

I’ve also taken up a gym membership and have been attending the gym two times a week working all muscles in the body in preparation for the year ahead. I’ve also been on my feet most days as for my second job, and have been moving quite frequently and even been making sure to park further away from work to achieve more steps throughout my day.

On the nights where it is cooler the family and I will head out into the backyard for a hit at cricket.
